  • Anderson Hall, David Bowman (guest) wrote 18 years ago:
Rice's School of Architecture is world-renowned. As of early 2007, the undergraduate program is ranked 2nd in the country, and the graduate program is 6th. (Both rankings come from a 2006 survey of architecture schools by Design Intelligence). The school is firmly rooted in the theoretical, academic side of architecture. For example, the current Dean is a widely-published author, but has been involved in very few actual building projects. This type of approach is perfectly valid, but many students feel that they are getting a trendy, fashionable education that has little to do with the reality of working as an architect. Other students have the time of their life and wouldn't think of going elsewhere. One benefit to studying architecture at Rice is that the rest of the campus thinks you are one of the cool kids, because (apart from the occasional giant cardboard juice box sighting) they have no idea what architects do. All they know is that the lights in Anderson Hall are on 24/7. If you are considering attending Rice to study architecture, investigate the school closely to make sure that it's the right place for you. Not everyone can appreciate the highly academic approach that Rice offers. Also, be prepared to deal with Houston's intolerable sprawl on a daily basis - something that will constantly remind you that architects, despite rhetoric to the contrary, have very little control over what actually gets built in our cities.

Definitely overpriced, but the sandwiches are good enough to occasionally justify driving through the surrounding neighborhood to get there.
